Purchasing furniture before looking at a layout

A lot of people unfortunately don't think about layout of their space before purchasing furniture. It so important to start with thinking about the size and shape of the room you are looking to redecorate. It is an exciting part to start looking at everything new, but never get carried away, as if you don't think to measure first pieces could look too big or even too space for the room.

Here are a few things to take into consideration:-

  1. Measure the areas, take into consideration where doorways, windows, alcove and radiators are. (and remember skirtings)

  2. Think carefully about how you're going to use the space. i.e. living room- do you want a focal point like a fireplace or feature wall with media? How many people will use the space? Do you need storage?

  3. Taking into consideration how you will use the space, now it's to position where items will sit, work with the measurements to sit nicely in the room. i.e make sure you don't choose furniture that over hangs an opening, or buy a sideboard that looks too small for an alcove, fill the space.

These are just a few things to think of before even looking at furniture, it's always important to think of scale in your room and a balance.
